Why choose a mountain bike?
Enjoying nature, challenging yourself and others, or a bit of both: A mountain bike (MTB) offers the perfect mix. These off-road capable bikes are ready for any adventure beyond the tarmac and busy traffic. Their popularity is at an all-time high – along with the number of official MTB trails.
The different types of mountain bikes:
Cross-Country Mountain Bikes
For those who race or love long, fast rides on flowy trails, our cross-country mountain bikes are the perfect choice. These bikes are lightweight and efficient, making them ideal for covering a lot of ground quickly. Are you up for a bit more fun and stability on the trails but still want to have a lightweight and fast bike – we got you covered with a more trail orientated cross-country bike.

Hardtail vs. Full-suspension mountain bikes
The decision between a hardtail mountain bike and a full-suspension mountain bike ultimately comes down to personal preference and the type of riding you plan to do. Hardtail bikes have a rigid rear end, which makes them more efficient for climbing and more affordable than full-suspension bikes. Full-suspension bikes have a rear suspension that absorbs more shock and provides more comfort on
rough terrain. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide which type of bike is right
for you. For South Africa we recommend full-suspension bikes as the ground is often hard-packed and therefore hard on your body.

How much suspension travel do you need?
When it comes to suspension, the ideal amount of travel depends largely on your riding style. In general, hardtails offer between 100 mm of travel for marathon bikes and up to 140 mm for trail bikes. Full-suspension bikes, on the other hand, range from 100 mm for cross-country racing to a hefty 200 mm on dedicated downhill machines.
As a general rule, the more suspension travel a mountain bike has, the better it handles technical descents and rough terrain. Bikes with less travel are typically lighter and more efficient when climbing.
If you’re looking for a versatile all-rounder for South Africa, we recommend a full-suspension bike
with 110–120 mm of fork travel, such as the Lux World Cup or the Lux Trail. For those who focus fully on trail riding and care less about weight and efficiency on the climbs, our Neuron or Spectral trail bikes, offering 130–160 mm of suspension travel, are excellent choices.
